description:

For federal reporting and the delineation of Metropolitan Planning Areas, states must define Adjusted Urban Area Boundaries. These are based on the Census Urban Area Boundaries, but adjusted for transportation use - for example, the Census Bureau often puts a boundary down the middle of a road, while for transportation purposes it should be unambiguous which side of a boundary that road is on. Adjusted Urban Area Boundaries are used to determine whether projects should be treated as Rural or Urban, and affects reporting requirements and the extent of the Federal Aid Highway System. This dataset was accepted by FHWA in May 2024, and was created based on the 2020 Census data. It will need to be replaced following the 2030 Census.
